Well, after a long delay I have my 30-06 at home and ready to play with. Certainly not new, likely from the 1946-1952 era. It is an FN Mauser commercial large ring action, assembled by Husqvarna in Sweden. It has a Lyman aperture sight installed, and the receiver is factory drilled/tapped for scope bases--and the original filler screws remain in place. Condition is 95%+, only a few small field dings--character marks, in other words. The stock is a classic type of the Townsend Whelen pattern, much like those seen on postwar pre-64 Winchester Model 70s.
It arrived too late to deer-hunt locally with, load development would take too long. The 6.5 x 55 will have to do. FOR SURE it will be going along to Alberta in 2011. I will be doing a scope/rifle combination re-shuffle after deer season closes, a step that also awaited the 30-06's arrival to initiate.
Range day to follow.

What he said. Do you have glass for it?

Pics to follow in the future, kinda bucking other issues presently--ocean fishing prep, primarily.
I do have glass for it, likely candidates are Leupold 2x-7x or 4x-12x. A Weaver 2x-10x is another option, but the "Musical Chairs" process with rifles, mounts, and scopes needs some study before committing one way or another. I'm not opposed to buying another glass, either--a 3x-9x Burris or Leupold just seems RIGHT on a standard-weight 30-06. Gotta look all the toys over before deciding one way or the other. For now, aperture Lymans are fine--I can shoot those nearly as well as a scope.

wonderful, Kinda hard to beat a standard Burris 3X9X40 for sure atop a 30-06. thats what I use, corse out here in the desert I think I need more, but back in the mid west and east that is a darn good option for sure.
hurry up and get them loads developed for sure

Will do, Jawja and all o' y'all.
Gotta tell y'all, I had a tough time of it--the guy selling the Husqy also had some other right fine 30-06 rifles and a 308 bolter, all spread out and ready to select from. Among these were two 1903A3 sporters (NICE jobs, too), a Mannlicher-Schoenauer M-1952 in 30-06 UNDRILLED, and a Browning repro Win 95 in 30-06. The 308 was a pre-64 Winchester 70. All were at least 90%, the M/S was 95%+ and the Browning was like-new. I kept my eye on the prize, but the M/S and the 95 did turn my head just a bit.
On the same trip, I got to visit the Elmer Keith Museum inside the Cabela's in Boise. Nice exhibit, for sure. In the same store was a decent Colt Official Police 38 Special x 5", a re-blue but in a rare barrel length for $329. I gave it a long look, and it was mechanically excellent--but I must be getting more mature. I declined to pursue it, since my next objective is a bottom-feeder in 45 ACP.
But just 'cause I'm on a diet doesn't mean I can't look at the menu now and then. There was a mechanically excellent S&W 38 Outdoorsman (N-frame Heavy Duty) x 4" in original nickel, no price marked but worth a second look. That was at Boise Guns. What REALLY got my attention at BG was a display model SIG P-220 stainless for $749. THAT one almost withdrew my MasterCard of its own accord, and only the thought of Marie using another of the SIGs on me when I returned home with it prevented its purchase.
Great trip. I do enjoy visiting the United States.

My vote is a Leoplold 3x9 in a matte finish, not to costly even if you have to buy new. To be honist my choice is almost alway's Leopliod.

Leupold is well-represented in the gun safe, as are old school Redfields. The 9.3 x 62 will likely get one of the Redfields, an interesting old 1x-4x with European post and metric reticle calibrations of 'one click = 10mm @ 100 meters'. This will replace the Leup 2x-7x now residing atop it.
Scopes for anything other than rats tend to be Leupold in my world. I'm also a believer in back-up iron sights on a hunting rifle, which the '06 has in depth (folding open barrel sight, Lyman aperture on the action).

The FN Husqv has been one of those rifle's I've wanted to get my hand's on but couldn't locate. I know a lot of these barreled actions were sold in the USA during the 50's and 60's.
