AR scope mounting

I pulled the carry handle off my HBAR and replaced the handguards with a Hogue float tube. Completed the deal with a low profile gas block. Now I need scope rings. I know they will have to be high, but how high? Anybody here been down that road that can keep me from having to try several diferent ones?

I have posted this question on other forums. Everyone always recommends the larue lt104?. It is expensive. I have a varmint upper but have not got around to mounting a scope on it yet. I will probably end up buying the larue.

Your best resalt will come from having the front mount extennd over the handgaurd. Lareu and Armalight have one piece mounts, there are also teo piece mounts, the hight can only be determined when you mount it.

I used Yankee Hill riser blocks and medium Burris Signature rings. An extended charging handle also helps. If you're not set on high magnification, maybe a scout mount. It puts the optics forward and out of the way. Makes it easier to keep both eyes open (faster target acquisition). I really like it for a walkin' rifle.

BD,

The gun with the Nikon scope, are you happy with the eye relief? Is it possible to mount the scope lower and still be comfortable? I have an identical scope that I am looking to install on an upper.

I believe the eye relief on that scope is 3.6". Plenty for me and, up to mid-range magnification, forgiving in the sweet spot. I found that I couldn't mount it any lower. The straight stock doesn't allow it. At the height you see, a natural cheek weld puts me on the money. I like the riser block setup. Not a fan of super high rings, and I think the blocks are more rigid.

I put mine on Warne Quick Detach Ultra High Rings.( #A204LM) I think I got them from Natchez or Midway. Work pretty good and they do return to zero after they have been taken off. I would have preferred the LaRue, but with no clams to burn, these were less than 1/4 the LaRue price.

SC, you bring up a good question. I went with an Armalite one piece mount just like this one: http://dsgarms.com/index.cfm?fuseact...Product_ID=586

My scope is a 42mm objective, I believe. If you have a smaller objective you may be able to get away with a smaller height, but if you have a giant 50mm objective you might need something higher.

Regardless of what you go with, you'll want an extended charging handle like BD said.

I like the Burris PEPR one piece mount. Puts the scope as far forward as possible plus is very stable. Comes in 30mm or 1" size. Not a QD as such but it comes off pretty quick. Much more affordable than some other options. Depends on what your needs & your pocketbook are.

If you can't find it here it might not exist.:4:
AR15 One-Piece Mounts

For a reasonable price setup YHM makes a one piece riser that can get you more eye relief, the rings are up to you for the height you prefer. High Weaver Quad Locks work well on this rail for me.

+1. The Burris PEPR is awesome if you don't need quick release. I have one holding a Bushnell 6500 on my varminter AR.

I got it together. Found a one piece riser that I'd forgotten I bought. Set of low rings and it's good to go.

Do they make these http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct...m_campaign=657 without the rail machined in the top of them? I mean honestly, why put a rail on top of a set of rings?

Yo, they put rails on top of rails so that you can rail against the enemy. That's how we pimp your rifle.

They DO make a set of caps without the rail. You'll have to source them extra though I think. Odd thing, last I checked, was that Burris sells just the caps WITH the rails but not just the caps without. To get the ones without you'd have to buy another set of whole rings. Silly really. Since Burris sells the caps w/rails as an upgrade I've wondered if a clever person couldn't convince a vender to just sell him the PEPR with the caps already switched.

To mount an eotech or a Reflex to... some kind of heads up display. Kinda ninjafied, yeah, for you an me, but if I was workin point house to house, trying to find a sight picture in a hurry with high mag scope might make me worry a lil bit.

Using a Reflex, look an rip.

I know, but having the ability should you decide to is priceless

Only thing I would worry about with that mount in making sure I had enough eye relief.

I know, you could always go with a scout setup, but that's kinda limited too.
